The Effect of Er:YAG Laser on a Shear Bond Strength Value of Orthodontic Brackets to Enamel – A Preliminary Study

In this article, Dr. Jan Kyrik, Jacek Matys and colleagues compared the shear bond strength of the enamel surface using the LiteTouch™ (Er:YAG laser) combined or not with the 37% orthophosphoric acid solution.

The result: The LiteTouch™ combined with 37% orthophosphoric acid obtained the highest values of shear bond strength when compared with the conventional treatment and the laser alone. A significant change in the enamel surface was noted after applying laser, reaching up to 9% of enamel thickness.

The conclusion: The use of Er:YAG laser at 100 mJ x 10 Hz (1Watt) combined with 37% orthophosphoric acid for enamel conditioning improves the adhesion of composite materials to the tooth.
